This little road side stop was on Route 66 just off Interstate 40 after we visited Meteor Crater and on our way to the Petrified Forest and Painted Dessert, we just had to stop. They play Eagles music outside all day long:)

Meteor Crater, AZ

Chris and I visited this landmark on trip across the US on Highway 40 from Los Angeles, CA to Atlanta, GA, 15 years ago. I was moving back East and he flew to drive with me for 4 days. We didn’t plan to stop any where, just drove about 10 hours a day. This was a total spontaneous stop that billboards lead us to. We didn’t have smart phone back them to look up stuff along the way.

We were excited to stop here again to show the girls. It is commercialized now. Four years ago they built a visitors center complete with a museum, 15 minute reenactment movie and hefty price tag. It is worth seeing because it’s the best preserved, first proven and largest meteor impact site on the planet. 50,000 years ago a 500 million year old meteor entered our atmosphere at a speed of 26,000 miles per hour and hit our planet with an explosive force of more than 20 million tons of TNT! The crater is a mile across (20 football fields could rest on the bottom floor) and 550 feet deep. They also have a large piece of the meteor which is cool to touch. It is made of the same materials as the center of our planet. It was found 2 miles from the impact site.

We didn’t take the guided tour because it’s an hour long and we were on our way to the Petrified Forest on the same day so the timing didn’t work out. They said that all the information given on the tour is the same as what’s in the museum.
